N.U.in

Costa Rica’s modern capital, San José, is a rich resource for Latin American culture, including the ornate and charming Teatro Nacional, the lively and vibrant Mercado Central, and the historical pre-Columbian gold museum, Museo de Oro.

N.U.in Costa Rica offers participants a closer understanding of the challenges in balancing issues of cultural diversity, the environment, and economic development—often-competing interests for communities around the world. Participants pursue their studies through the International Center for Development Studies (ICDS), in conjunction with the Universidad Latina de Costa Rica. Modern facilities, advanced equipment and extensive participant services provide the perfect environment for ICDS’s highly participatory programs. ICDS also connects participants to Costa Rican issues and communities through service learning opportunities, guest lectures, and field trips to sites in and around San José, including a coffee plantation and an active volcano. Participants also have the opportunity to really hone their language skills and experience the culture by living with local host families.

Academics

Each N.U.in participant will take classes at Universidad Latina de Costa Rica in partnership with the International Center for Development Studies (ICDS), earning a total of 17 credits providing that a grade of “C” or higher is received in all courses. These credits will be recorded on the participant's Northeastern transcript automatically as transfer credit at the time he/she enrolls for the spring 2012 semester. Transcripts will be provided to participants in January 2012. More information about ICDS can be found here.
All N.U.in participants will take a 1-credit Global Experience course and participate in a service-learning experience to help them prepare for, gain from, and reflect upon their term abroad as a profound global experience. By actively engaging in the local community, participants will gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the local language, history, and culture.
N.U.in participants will take a variety of courses abroad depending on which Northeastern college they have been admitted into. For example, the schedule for the College of Social Sciences and Humanities will be different than the College of Business Administration. Courses will count in a variety of different ways, depending on the participant's intended major. Types of course credit that will transfer to Northeastern include major credit, core credit, and elective credit.

College Compatibility: The N.U.in Costa Rica Program is suitable for participants admitted into the College of Arts, Media and Design, the College of Business Administration (BSBA, BSIB-international affairs and Spanish track only), the College of Social Sciences and Humanities and the General Studies Program. The Program is also suitable for participants admitted to the College of Computer and Information Science, the College of Science, and the Program for Undeclared Participants; however those participants must take 1 or 2 summer courses after the first year in order to maintain their regular academic progress. All courses are conducted in English.

Costs

The cost of the Program includes tuition, housing, meals (breakfast and dinner on weekdays, three meals on weekends), some excursions and program-related travel expenses. Obtaining a student visa, mandatory cell phone, food and all other personal expenses will be additional.

While every participant has different requirements for personal monthly budgets, participants should plan to have $400-$600 for a monthly budget for personal expenses, such as food and travel. More information will be provided to enrolled participants on what to bring.
The first step you must take to enroll in the N.U.in Program is to submit your non-refundable enrollment deposits: tuition, housing, and a travel deposit by May 2 through the Admitted Participant Portal.
Space is limited at each location—deposit early to secure your enrollment.

Travel Information

Passports: All participants will need a passport to participate in N.U.in. Participants who do not already have a passport should apply for one as soon as possible. U.S. citizens can find more information at the U.S. Department of State passport site. Passports must be valid for at least four months beyond the scheduled departure from England. Passports that are due to expire on or before January 31, 2012 should be renewed now.
Visas: For a visa, N.U.in Costa Rica participants will be applying for a Permiso de Estadía once they have arrived in the country. Obtaining a Costa Rica Student Visa will cost approximately $350 USD and is subject to change. More information on applying will be given to enrolled participants.
International participants: For questions about a visa to Costa Rica, please contact your local Costa Rican Consulate for more information.
Health insurance: Participants are required to have international coverage for the duration of the program. Interested participants should check now to see if they have international coverage from their current healthcare provider. If they do not, the participant must purchase temporary international health insurance that suits the participant’s personal needs.
Supplementary medical security and travel services: Participants will automatically be covered under International SOS, a study abroad medical security and travel service, which is included in the cost of the program. ISOS supplements participants’ regular health insurance by providing them with worldwide quality healthcare and emergency assistance services 24 hours a day.
